Female boxing takes centre stage at Khomas Cup

Two young female boxers, Victoria Nambinga and Meriam Nghilongwa, made their amateur boxing debuts during the third edition of the Khomas Cup held in the capital over the weekend.

The Khomas Cup, hosted the past two years by the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service, gives young people an opportunity to compete in football and netball.

During this year’s edition, the sport officer at the line ministry in the Khomas Region introduced boxing and wrestling to this annual youth tournament.



Nakathila to fight in Russia

Jeremiah ‘No Respect’ Nakathila is scheduled to fight Russian Evgeny ‘Happy Gilmore’ Chuprakov for the vacant World Boxing Organisation (WBO) InterContinental Super Featherweight title next month.

A media statement availed to Nampa by the Nestor Sunshine Tobias Boxing and Fitness Academy on Wednesday said the undefeated and current WBO Africa champion will face the current WBO Europe title-holder on 18 November.



Nestor happy with ‘Champions in Action Part 7’ boxing bonanza

Tanzanian boxer Twalib Tuwa has recovered and is on his way home after suffering a devastating knockout by Namibia’s Japhet 'The Thin Man' Utoni in the fourth round of their fight here on Saturday.

Tuwa required medical attention at a hospital, where he was treated and discharged.

Promoter Nestor Tobias said Tuwa was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure after being knocked down twice.

Tobias was full of praise for Utoni.

“That man is a lion; he walked through an experienced boxer like a hot knife through butter. Better things are still to come from Utoni,” he said.



Uutoni improves his WBO ranking

Jafet ‘The Namibian Lion' Uutoni has moved up on the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) ranking, a few days before defending his Junior Flyweight International title.

A media release made available by the Nestor Sunshine Boxing and Fitness Academy on Tuesday said Uutoni has moved from position eight to seven.

This means that if he wins the fight on 08 October in Windhoek against Tanzanian Twalib Tuza in the ‘Champions in Action’ Part 7, this will further improve his ranking; most likely into the top three.



Shihepo loses in Manchester

Namibia’s Wilberforce ‘Black Mamba’ Shihepo suffered his ninth professional defeat when he was knocked out by Callum Johnson in Manchester, England on Saturday evening.

Online media reports have it that the 33-year-old Namibian accounted himself well, landing a couple of good shots in the first, second and third rounds of the vacant Commonwealth light-heavyweight fight. Johnson, from England, seemed to take the punches well but started troubling Shihepo from the fourth round.
