Junior tennis tournament a success

The Namibia Tennis Association (NTA) on Saturday held a successful school league national championship in the capital.

Over 100 children from 12 schools took part in the tournament, with the bulk of the schools being from the Khomas Region.

Erongo was the other region that took part. The northern, central and southern regions could not participate in the tournament due to lack of funds for transport and accommodation for the junior tennis players.



Boxer Jonas Junias waits to hear fate

Namibian amateur boxer Jonas Junias is yet to appear in court, almost two months after he was released from police custody following allegations of attempted rape of a housekeeper at the Olympic Village in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Namibia National Olympic Committee (NNOC) president Abner Xoagub told Namibian Sun yesterday that they were still waiting to hear the new court date.

Junias was arrested in Brazil following an alleged attempted sexual assault of a Brazilian housemaid at the Athletes'' Village in early August during the 2016 Olympic Games.



Izinyoka venom not too strong for Van Heerden

Namibian boxer Sacky 'Izinyoka' Shikukuta lost to Chris 'The Heat' van Heerden from South Africa for the vacant World Boxing Association (WBO) Pan Africa Welterweight title in Johannesburg, South Africa on Saturday.

The scorecard read 117-111, 117-111 and 118-110 for Van Heerden after 12 rounds of boxing by the southpaw boxers.

Shikukuta gave a good account of himself, landing a couple of noteworthy blows on Van Heerden. He took the fight to the South African who remained on the back foot for most of the fight.



KK Palace wins Silver Wolf Spur Tournament

King Kauluma (KK) Palace Football Club (FC) is the first champion of the Silver Wolf Spur Ongwediva-sponsored football tournament that ended at Oshakati in the Oshana Region on Sunday.

Coordinator of the Namibia Football Association (NFA) in the Oshana Region, Sem Nekwaya disclosed this to Nampa here on Tuesday.

All 12 teams from the Oshana Regional Second Division League and top three teams each from the sister regions of Ohangwena, Omusati and Oshikoto participated in the tournament.



Izinyoka to fight in South Africa

Namibian southpaw boxer Sacky 'Izinyoka' Shikukuta left for South Africa on Monday, where he will face ‎Chris 'The Heat' van Heerden for the vacant World Boxing Association Welterweight title.

A media release on Monday said the fight between Shikukuta and Van Heerden will be televised live on SuperSport on Saturday 22 October from Emperors Palace in Johannesburg.

The Namibian boxer promised to live up to his name saying “I know van Heerden is an experienced fighter and I respect him for that and as a fighter, but I'm going there only for a win and nothing else”.
