Omaheke crowned champions of The Namibian Newspaper Cup


The Omaheke football team won the final match of The Namibian Newspaper Cup with a solitary goal against Kavango East on Monday to take the coveted trophy home.

Substitute Jandzumukaperes Muundja came from the bench in the second half of the match to score the only goal of the game and win the cup for Omaheke for the fourth time.

The Namibian Newspaper Cup, supported by Nedbank Namibia, took place at the Katima Mulilo Sports Complex.

Malembu resigns as Rundu Chiefs coach


Shakes Malembu has resigned as Rundu Chiefs Football Club coach with immediate effect, just three months into his six-month contract.

The national Under-20 football team assistant coach replaced John Sikerete, who was relieved of his duties in December 2017 due to the club’s poor performance in the first leg of the 2017/18 Namibia Premier League (NPL) season.

On Monday, Malembu handed his resignation letter to the club’s chairperson stating that due to personal reasons which he could not disclose for the time being, he will no longer be the head coach of Rundu Chiefs.

Schütz launches ‘Three Lions from the Land of the Brave’


Veteran sports journalist Helge Schütz launched his book, ‘Three Lions from the Land of the Brave’ here on Monday.

The book tells the stories of local boxers Paulus ‘The Hitman’ Moses, Paulus ‘The Rock’ Ambunda and Julius ‘Blue Machine’ Indongo, who rose from humble beginnings to become world champions after a lot of sacrifice, extraordinary dedication and perseverance.

Schütz, who is also a photographer and editor of the former monthly, Namibia Sports Magazine, said at the book launch he was inspired by ‘Four Kings’ written by George Kimball.

Otjozondjupa ready to defend title at Newspaper Cup


Defending champions and three time winners of The Namibian Newspaper Cup, Otjozondjupa Region on Tuesday announced their 20 players and technical team for this year's tournament.

The 18th edition of the youth tournament will be held in Katima Mulilo from 30 March to 02 April and for the first time, includes a netball category.

Otjozondjupa team manager Rudolf Hipona told Nampa on Wednesday, although the rain halted their preparations for a day, the team's plans are on track for them to defend the title they won last year.

Katie Brennan: Australia's AFL accused of gender discrimination


The captain of an Australian rules football team has launched a high-profile gender discrimination complaint after she was banned from playing in her league's biggest match.

Katie Brennan was suspended from the Australian Football League Women's (AFLW) over a rough tackle.

A similar offence in the men's league would attract a fine, not a suspension.

Brennan has taken her case to the Australian Human Rights Commission. League officials have denied sexism.
