Very little relief in pensioners’ N$50


THE N$50 per month increase Finance Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila has given to pensioners in her new budget will barely put a 10 kg bag of mealie meal on the table of senior citizens.
With the extra dollars a pensioner could buy a litre of milk, a brown bread, 2 kg of sugar, a small bag of soup bones, one toilet roll and one bar of soap.
But for that she would need N$1,15 more, a spot check by The Namibian showed yesterday. We filled a shopping basket with the cheapest necessities available at one of the big retailers in Katutura.

Luderitz Crayfish festival to be launched Friday


The Lüderitz Town Council will launch the 5th annual Lüderitz Crayfish Festival here on Friday with a fundraising dinner at the Nest Hotel.
A media statement issued on Wednesday by the Public Relations Officer of the Lüderitz Town Council, Shali Akwaanyenga, said the event will be addressed by the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Bernard Esau.
The 2012 Lüderitz Crayfish Festival will be celebrated under the theme “Our crayfish - Our Pride”.

Karas Boxing team unhurt in bus accident


Twenty-two male junior boxers from the Karas Region escaped serious injury on Wednesday evening after a bus in which they were travelling crashed into an oncoming truck.
None of the boxers were injured in the accident, although the left front door and the windscreen of the bus, which was rented from the Government Garage, were terribly damaged.
The accident happened some 15 kilometres north of the Asab River area, on the road between Keetmanshoop and Mariental.

Zuma holds consultations with Pohamba


South African President Jacob Zuma arrived in Namibia late on Wednesday, and then held a three-hour closed-door consultative meeting with his Namibian counterpart.
President Hifikepunye Pohamba received Zuma at State House in the capital, where he commended the South African leader for taking the initiative to visit Namibia for consultations on matters concerning the continent, sub-region and their two countries.

TV breakfast debate on growth of Nam economy


Local business leaders will participate in a networking breakfast and television debate hosted by CNBC Africa and the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) at the Hilton Hotel Windhoek next week Wednesday.
Managing Director for Consumer News and Business Channel (CNBC) Africa, Gary Alfonso said in a media statement issued on Wednesday that the event is aimed at highlighting important deliverables for the growth of Namibia's economy as a key part of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
