A 14-year-old boy risked his life on Wednesday to help five boys who had been swept out to sea at Henties Bay.

Dylan Davey !Gaoseb, better known in his neighbourhood as "Boo Boo", rescued two of the boys, the youngest of whom was six.

Two of the other boys eventually managed to make it to shore by themselves.
The fifth boy, the 10-year-old Lee-Wayne Delwin Nanubeb, unfortunately did not make it and by Thursday, the police were still searching for his body.

Nampa spoke to !Gaoseb on the beach on Thursday, where he was waiting to see if Nanubeb's body would be found.

He recalled how he was walking along the beach when he noticed the distressed swimmers, immediately took off his clothes and jumped into the water to help them.

!Gaoseb said he brought one of the boys to shore and swam back in to help the second one.

He then however realised that he might not have enough time to go back for the other boys and ran to call the emergency services.

By the time the emergency service officials reached the beach, two of the other boys had managed to swim to shore. The oldest of the boys who survived, was nine.

!Gaoseb said it was difficult because the boys were far apart and had been swept out into deep, rough waters.

"I had to swim from one to another, sometimes I could only see the head, especially for the young boy. He was totally unconscious when I took him out," he said.

!Gaoseb told this news agency he was screaming and asking people looking on from the beach, for help.

"Nobody could swim, it was just me, everyone was just watching."
The boy said there are no lifeguards on the beach where most children from the town swim.

!Gaoseb however said he was not afraid of drowning because he is a good, self-taught swimmer.

"The waves almost took me away too when I got tired but I floated until I felt stronger and then swam out."

Asked if he is interested in becoming a lifeguard or diver, the brave boy said he could pursue it, but his passion is to become a traffic officer.
!Gaoseb stays with his grandmother and passed Grade 7 at Kamwandi Junior Secondary School in Henties Bay last year.

Erongo Regional Crime Investigations Coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu on Thursday said the six-year-old boy is recovering in the Swakopmund State Hospital, while the rest did not require hospital admission.
