Tigers thrash Santos for maximum points

Namibia Premier League (NPL) defending champions Tigers Football Club beat Santos 4-1 at the Sport Klub Windhoek (SKW) Stadium on Sunday.

Tigers collected maximum points over the weekend as they also beat Young Chiefs from Oshakati with a single goal on Saturday to collect their first three points at the same venue.

Going into the weekend they only had three points and were 13th on the log of 16 teams with two games played.

With maximum six points collected over the weekend from Young Chiefs and Chief Santos, the Shandumbala-based outfit now have nine points.

On Sunday, Tigers opened the score line as early as the 21st minute after Roger Katjiteo capitalised from a loss ball created by a misunderstanding between the Santos goalkeeper and defence for Tigers opener.

With five minutes to go before the half-time break, Katjiteo doubled their score with a moment of brilliance that saw him heading in a cross from Absalom Iimbondi for their 2-0 half-time score.

In the second half, the two outfits came out with a more attacking attitude but it was Santos hard work that paid off first when the referee awarded them a penalty in the 75th minute. Brendon Kotungondo made no mistake from the spot for the consolation goal.

Santos managed to get a second penalty in the 83rd minute, but Kotungondo missed from the spot.

With only four minutes to go in the game, Tigers made Santos dreams of collecting a point from their fixture impossible as Iimbondi scored in the 86th and 90th minute for their 4-1 win.

In a game that was played earlier at the same venue, Tura Magic beat Young Chiefs 3-1 to extend their points at the top and remained second on the log behind African Stars, who are currently top after six matches played thus far.

In other games played on Sunday at the University of Namibia (UNAM) Sports Stadium, Citizens beat Young Africa 2-0, while UNAM and Black Africa played to a one-all draw.

In Rundu, Civics lost 3-1 against Rundu Chiefs, while in Walvis Bay, Orlando Pirates were beaten 2-1 by Eleven Arrows. Otjiwarongo-based Life Fighters collect three points after defeating Blue Waters 2-1.

In a match played in Otjiwarongo, Mighty Gunners lost 2-1 against Civics.
