The Omusati Region has the highest population of 294 206 cattle in the northern communal areas (NCA) of Namibia.
Minister of Agriculture, Water and Forestry John Mutorwa said this whilst officially inaugurating the Millennium Challenge Account Namibia (MCA-N)-sponsored state-of-the-art veterinary services clinic at Outapi in the Omusati Region on Wednesday.
The statistics of the Directorate of Veterinary Services in the line ministry revealed that a total of 11 315 sheep and 187 246 goats, as well as a number of other domestic animals are found in the Omusati Region.
“These domesticated animals require public veterinary health services, which the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry is mandated to provide,” the minister explained.
Before independence, Mutorwa said, there was no veterinary health facility in the northern regions of Oshana, Ohangwena, Oshikoto and Omusati.
Thus, according to Mutorwa, the government has thought of the expansion of veterinary services through the construction of State veterinary offices/clinics in all the communal areas of the country.
The Outapi Veterinary Office/Clinic is similar to others also established by the MCA-N at Okakarara, Epukiro, Omuthiya and Eenhana to the total amount of N.dollars 98 million.
These clinics provide top-notch working space for 15 staff members, meeting rooms, laboratories, sterilisation rooms, freezers and cold rooms, post-mortem rooms, large and small animal treatment areas, theatres, pharmacies, kennels and holding pens.
The establishment of such veterinary service facilities, Mutorwa said, will translate into increased animal disease surveillance and improved access to veterinary services by the farmers.
He then encouraged farmers to utilise the facilities in order to improve their livestock farming.
Mutorwa also reminded the veterinarians and all other staff members at the clinics to ensure good services, because establishment of state-of-the art veterinary service facilities alone is not enough if not complimented with quality service delivery.
All clinics will each have a chief animal health technicians, animal health technician, administrative and support staff.
The Okakarara, Epukiro and Muthiya veterinary clinics have already been inaugurated, and Mutorwa is expected to inaugurate the fifth and last one at Eenhana in the Ohangwena Region on Friday.
