More than 350 delegates have registered for the first-ever national HIV/Aids conference which starts in Swakopmund on Monday.

Delegates includes health officials, academic experts, representatives from the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/Aids (UNAIDS), Namibia National Students Organisation (NANSO), local authorities, business people and politicians.

They will from Monday to Wednesday deliberate on how to reduce or even root out the pandemic in Namibia.

Health Director for the Erongo Region, Jeremia Nghipundjwa also previously told Nampa the conference will provide an opportunity to build on past achievements by sharing information on new interventions.

Communications and public relations strategist Usi //Hoebeb on Sunday told this news agency everything is in place for the conference to start on Monday.

“The conference programme is packed with topical sessions which will be of interest to a wide-ranging audience,” said //Hoebeb.

As part of the event a ‘village’ was set up at the Vineta Sports Stadium on Saturday.

At the village, services such as voluntary counselling and testing and registration for Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) are available.

There is also some entertainment in the form of stand-up comedy by the FreeYourMind consortia, poster exhibitions by primary school learners and a quiz for secondary school learners.

“The village concept is a unique one where information around HIV/Aids as well as issues surrounding the disease are shared in a more relaxed and artistic manner,” //Hoebeb said.

Deputy Mayor of Swakopmund, Maria Elago officiated at the opening on Saturday.

Elago encouraged residents, especially the youth, to go and experience the village.

“What you stand to learn here may change your life. Encourage others to come around and be a part of this unique experience,” she said.

The opening included musical performances by local artists Stella, Phura, Ann Singer and the Namibia Community Skills Development Foundation (COSDEF) band from Swakopmund.

There was also a seven-a-side football tournament where eight teams from the coast battled it out.

Young Beat defeated the Ministry of Health’s team in the final game to walk off with a N.dollars 2 000 prize.

In the potjiekos cook-off competition, a Swakopmund resident affectionately known as ‘Meme Sara’ took the first prize of N.dollars 1 000 home.

All the prizes were sponsored by the events management company, Usi //Hoebeb Communications.
