NASCAM not happy with NAMA category cuts

The Namibian Society of Composers and Authors of Music (NASCAM) raised dissatisfaction over the recent announcement of the Namibian Annual Music Awards (NAMA's) cutting 11 categories from the 2018 awards.

Newly appointed NAMA's executive chairperson, Umbi Karuaihe-Upi announced last week that the categories were cut for 2018 due to a lack of entries.
Furthermore, the annual show, usually held over two days, will be a one-day event in 2018 due to poor attendance of the industrial award show held prior to the main show.

Categories scrapped include best kizomba, best shambo and best live performer.

NASCAM chief executive officer, John Max Tuesday told Nampa the society plays a significant role as the backing committee and category consultant for entries of the music awards and should have been informed prior to the announcement of the changes.

These changes or rather omissions of the categories have affected many song writers and those who invest in such categories as they were not informed in advance to mentally prepare for the new changes, he said.

Max further maintained that some of the reasons given by the organisers were not valid because the Friday night industrial event is mostly attended by invited guests.

He said it would have been wise for the organisers to consult a few other stakeholders before eliminating the categories from the event.

NASCAM is always ready to advise in the development of music activities, we should be involved in all matters pertaining to music events to continue improving the music and cultural heritage of our country, added Max.

In response, Karuaihe-Upi told Nampa the NAMA's have an independent structure that governs and manages the event and any decision regarding changes to the event or its format is made by the executive committee.

The committee is mandated to do so by powers vested in them and do not need to consult anyone, she said.

She also said the changes are experimental and that organisers are ready to discuss matters with stakeholders.

NASCAM is a very important stakeholder and we value their input, said Karuaihe-Upi.

The award show is scheduled to take place on 28 April 2018.
