Namibia Sevens Rugby can improve: Booysen

Coach of the Namibia Rugby Sevens, Jurie Booysen said the game has potential to grow in leaps and bounds in Namibia because there is interest.

Speaking to Nampa on Saturday in Swakopmund where the Safland Rugby Sevens Tournament 2016 took place from Friday to Sunday, Booysen said there has always been a lot of interest in Sevens Rugby but it grew after the sport was incorporated into the 2016 Olympics.

He called on rugby authorities here to set up a Rugby Sevens league as a way of training players.

Booysen said South Africa is performing well in Sevens Rugby because universities and clubs there compete regularly, making it easy for the national selectors to come up with a quality team.

“If we establish a Rugby Sevens league, we will be able to compete at a bigger level. For this tournament we were given a short notice period, hence you can see our level of fitness is way below that of South Africa, Kenya and Germany.”

He suggested that for next year’s tournament, organisers send out invitations earlier, if not right after the just completed one. This, he said, would allow clubs to diarise and prepare well.

South Africa’s coach Neil Powell praised the tournament, saying it was their first for the season and it was important for them to gauge their preparedness. His team won the competition again this year like in 2015.

“I am impressed with the organisation. The quality of rugby may not be at the level of what we expect but we enjoyed our games against Kenya, Namibia and Germany.”

Powell said they would welcome an invitation to participate in the same tournament next year.

He said he hoped that more quality teams get invited to participate in this tournament, noting that doing so will help Namibia grow the sport.

Powell said they need to give all their players’ game time before they start with the World Series which commences next month. South Africa and Kenya will kick off the HSBC World Rugby Dubai Sevens Series from 02 December.

Namibia will play in the 2016/17 HSBC World Rugby Hong Kong Sevens Series in April.
