Namibia cannot have two centres of power: Geingob

Namibia cannot have two centres of power, one that is the president of the country and another person as the president of the Swapo Party.

President Hage Geingob said this at the official inauguration of the Swapo Party office in the Kavango West Region on Wednesday.

He said the legacy of the party must continue as talked about during the last elections in 2014.

The party's 2014 election campaign under the motto The Legacy Continues portrayed the country?s three presidents with the sub-heading Consolidating Peace, Stability, Prosperity, associating Sam Nujoma with peace, Hifikepunye Pohamba with stability and Geingob with prosperity.

Comrade Nujoma was never challenged as the president of the country or that of Swapo. He was a sole candidate. Former President Pohamba was challenged for vice presidency but for two terms as president of the country or party, he was never challenged, Geingob told over 200 people who gathered in front of the party office.

The Head of State said he never wanted to be the sole candidate as he has participated in elections.

Geingob further stated that people are trying to create an impression that there are problems between him and the Founding Father of the country.
He stressed that Nujoma is the one who offered him the position of chief whip in 2007, told him to return to the politburo and asked him to be vice president of Swapo.

So try to come between Marco Hausiku and me, Nujoma and me or Pohamba and me. You are wasting your time young people, he added.

Another issue the president said that has been misrepresented, is the slate.
People are saying by having a slate you are intimidating others. But these are elections, you must intimidate, Geingob said.

He explained that the four candidates vying for the positions of president, vice-president, secretary- general and deputy secretary-general were not voted for by the politburo as a slate.

Each one of them, he said, were individually nominated in the politburo and seconded by 17 other members of the politburo.

There is no crime about the slate. Some people are just very angry. This is a requirement of the politburo that your nomination starts there, Geingob said.

His slate for the remainder of the top four positions are Deputy Prime Minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah for vice president, Rural and Urban Development Minister Sophia Shaningwa for SG, while former Deputy Prime Minister Marco Hausiku will stand for the deputy SG portfolio.

Home Affairs Minister Pendukeni Iivula-Ithana and Helmuth Angula will also contest the vice presidency, while Armas Amukwiyu will contest the secretary-general portfolio.

Petrina Haingura and Martha Namundjebo-Tilahun will go up against Hausiku for the Deputy SG position.
