Fidel Castro’s contributions continue to inspire and enrich revolutionary principles in Cuba and the rest of the world, Speaker of the National Assembly Peter Katjavivi has said.

He said this in the National Assembly’s message of condolences for the Cuban people after Castro’s death on Friday at the age of 90.

The message was addressed to the President of the National Assembly of People’s Power and member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba, Estaban Lazo Hernandez.

Katjavivi said Namibia values the bond of friendship that has grown between Namibia and Cuba, which was shaped by a common desire for self-determination.

“Comrade Castro led an extra-ordinary life and was larger than life as he confronted many challenges and in the end prevailed against his adversaries,” he said.

Katjavivi said Castro proclaimed to the world that Cuba will stand in support of liberation struggles in Africa and elsewhere.

He further noted that Castro’s desire and energy to ensure a better world hinged upon the Cuban culture of enhancing and promoting leadership principles of working with all, for the good of all.

“This is the legacy that the world’s revolutionary giants have left behind,” Katjavivi said.

The Cuban government has declared nine days of mourning starting Saturday.

Castro's remains were cremated on Saturday and the mourning period will include a tour of his ashes throughout Cuba.

His memorial service will be held in Havana on Tuesday and the State funeral will then be held on 04 December 2016.
