Former United Stars head coach and National Under-20 (U20) assistant coach, Shakes Malembu has been appointed as the new coach of Rundu Chiefs on a six-month contract.

This comes after Rundu Chiefs parted ways with their former head coach, John Sikerete, in December 2017 due to the club?s poor performance in the first leg of the 2017/18 Namibia Premier League (NPL) season.

The team finished the first leg of the season bottom of the 16 team-league log with 10 points from 12 matches played.

Speaking to Nampa on Monday, Malembu said his goal at the moment is to help the team avoid relegation.

"We signed a short-term contract because we first have to make sure that the team survives relegation and after that we can then talk about the way forward for me coaching the team on a long term basis,? he said.

Malembu added that he will take the bull by its horns if he is to successfully help the team get out of the bottom of the log.

"As a coach, I am going to reinforce my team with seven new signings and that will be in the goalkeeping department, central defence, midfield and striking department.

"We have three outstanding games that we need to play and then our 15 games for the second leg, with a good squad I am sure we can pick up points at home and on the road," Malembu said.

The U20 assistant coach also added that he brought in William Chilufya, a Zambia national, as his assistant coach and Mathew Kanyaso as his second assistant.

"We have Zambian players in our squad and Chilufya has a better understanding of their style of play. That is why it is important to have him on my coaching team, while Kanyaso has gone through the Namibia Football Association's coaching courses and has a good understanding of Namibian football with his stint as coach of Eastern Chiefs," he said.

The second leg of the 2017/18 NPL season will start in February, after Namibia's participation in the 2018 Confederation of African Football Championship in Morocco.
