Police in the Kunene Region have re-arrested two Angolan nationals who had escaped from lawful custody on Saturday.

The two fugitives were re-arrested on Tuesday in the Omakange area, about 55 kilometres southeast of Opuwo.

The escapees, Lucas Simeon Taukondjele, 22, and 24-year-old Mweendangula Mutefi escaped from the Opuwo police holding cells after it was left unlocked.

According to a Namibian Police Force (NamPol) report dated 27 August, the two prisoners also forced open a piece of corrugated iron placed on the delivery gate to the cells so as to effect their escape.
Taukondjele faces two murder charges after he allegedly killed two women – one at Omakange and the other at Okahao in the Omusati Region in the same year.

Mutefi faces a charge of motor-vehicle theft.

The escapees were arrested after three days of a massive police hunt, assisted by the community.

According to NamPol’s Crime Investigations’ Co-ordinator for the Kunene Region, Deputy Commissioner Israel Hango, the duo broke into a cuca shop at Omakange on Sunday night.
Police officers were then deployed in the area to track them down on Monday morning.

Both have now been charged with escaping from lawful custody, and were due to appear in the Opuwo Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
