President Hage Geingob has described the late Winnie Madikizela-Mandela as a courageous revolutionary and colossus freedom fighter.

In a statement issued by State House on Wednesday, Geingob said she was a genuine comrade-in-arms and steadfast freedom fighter, who devoted her life to resistance against racial oppression and the tyranny of Apartheid.

The anti-apartheid activist and former wife of South Africa?s first black president, Nelson Mandela, died at the age of 81 at the Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg on Monday after a long illness, for which she had been in and out of hospital since the beginning of the year.

Geingob said her passing is a loss to her family and South Africa (SA), including the liberation movement.

"Comrade Winnie joined the liberation struggle in South Africa at an early age, at untold personal harm and became affectionately known as Mother of the Nation," the statement quoted the Head of State.

Geingob further mentioned that Madikizela-Mandela used to call him "son" and added that she lived a life of service in the interest of the oppressed people, working tirelessly for the realisation of economic freedom.

"I must say that the struggle for liberation and socio-economic justice has lost a once-in-a-generation heroine."

The President expressed his heartfelt condolences on behalf of the people and Government of Namibia to the people of SA, the government and the African National Congress for the loss of a struggle stalwart.

"At this hour of mourning, our thoughts and prayers go out to the bereaved family, whom we hope will find solace in the global outpouring of compassion and well wishes."

"Ma Winnie" was born Nomzamo Winifred Zanyiwe Madikizela on 26 September 1936 in Bizana, Eastern Cape.
She will be laid to rest on 14 April.
