Fifteen Namibian Police Force officers are being deployed to Sudan for the United Nations-African Union Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) peacekeeping mission.

The officers leave on Saturday for a one-year mission.

In a statement delivered on his behalf when the officers were bade farewell here on Wednesday, NamPol Inspector General, Lieutenant-General Sebastian Ndeitunga said the officers are the first of 45 members earmarked to serve the operation this year.

The remaining 30 officers leave for Sudan on 03 December.

Ndeitunga said NamPol has been participating in various United Nations missions across the world and has a good record.

Members of the force have been part of the United Nations Integrated Mission in East Timor and Liberia respectively, until the last day when peace and stability were eventually achieved in those two countries, he noted.

Ndeitunga further said the force is aware of daunting challenges such as the risk of being attacked or even during conflict.

We lost a member of our force in Liberia who was deployed on the same mission in 2015, however this should not discourage officers. Go out there and help the people of the Darfur region, he said.

Speaking at the same event, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation, Ambassador Selma Ashipala-Musavyi said the mission is a way for Namibia to give back to the world through the UN peacekeeping mission.

Through the mission you are going to protect those who cannot protect themselves in light of Article 96 of the Namibian Constitution, she said.
