Drought relief needed in Kunene Region: //Hoebeb
The Governor of the Kunene Region says urgent intervention is needed in the Epupa, Opuwo and Sesfontein constituencies as both people and livestock are suffering under extreme drought conditions there.
Governor Josua //Hoebeb told Nampa here on Wednesday that the Office of Deputy Prime Minister Marco Hausiku has been informed about the drought situation in the Kunene Region.
“I have received official letters from constituency councillors and traditional leaders, informing me about the situation in their respective constituencies.
My office is also waiting for an official assessment report on the extent of the drought in the region from agricultural extension officers,” said //Hoebeb, before explaining that the report is just a formality as the drought situation is evident in the region.
He also invited officials from the Kunene Regional Council who work with the drought relief programme in the region to map out plans on how to go about assisting people affected by it.
“Most farmers want new boreholes to be drilled in areas where there is a lot of grass, while vulnerable people such as pregnant women, children under five years of age, pensioners and people with disabilities have to be assisted with food relief,” the governor explained.
//Hoebeb added that it would be a huge burden on the government to drill a lot of boreholes at once as it is not only expensive, but the process of finding water underground and finding potable water which is consumable, is another challenge.
He suggested that boreholes for reserved grazing areas be planned in advance, and then be kept as part of contingency plans for drought situations.
Part of the Khorixas constituency is also affected by the drought.
