City of Windhoek launches Mayoral Under-13 League

The City of Windhoek (CoW) on Wednesday re-launched its annual Mayoral Under-13 Cup into a league, which will include football, netball and volleyball.

The Mayoral Cup is an initiative by the CoW to get the youth off the streets and onto sports fields.

This popular project has enticed the attention of many schools within the city and the event has always been successful, hence the decision to let it run over five months instead of a weekend, explained Windhoek Mayor Muesee Kazapua during the launch.

"This was done for the benefit of athletes; to ease up anatomical overload of playing more games in one weekend," highlighted Kazapua.

He said the league will assist in the promotion of a sport and recreation culture among youth at school level.

The tournament was established in 2010 with nine schools.

The league will run in collaboration with the Khomas Schools Sport Region (KSSR), and will be played at various schools across Windhoek.

KSSR Chairperson, Patrick Percy Xoagub commended the CoW for investing in the youth and converting the Mayoral Cup into a league.

The CoW budgeted N.dollars 60 000 for the Mayoral League 2018.

Among others, the money will be used to buy sports equipment for the winning teams as no school will be given cash.

The first prize is N.dollars 5 000 worth of sports equipment and 20 gold medals in all three sports codes. Second prize is N.dollars 3 000 worth of sports equipment and 20 silver medals, and third prize is N.dollars 2 000 worth of sports equipment and 20 bronze medals.
