Namibian national rugby player Arthur Christo Bouwer has been suspended from all rugby activities for four years after being found guilty of using a banned substance.

Bouwer, 26, provided an out-of-competition urine sample for testing on 15 June 2016 in Windhoek.

The test came out positive for dehydrochlormethyltestosterone, also known as ‘oral Turinabol’, which is classified as an exogenous androgenic anabolic steroid on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) 2016 List of Prohibited Substances.

As a result, World Rugby suspended Bouwer from participating in any international or club rugby matches for four years as of 12 July 2016.

He will only be eligible to play again on 11 July 2020.

The player may only train with a team or use the facilities of a union, club, rugby body or other member organisation of World Rugby, association or a union on or after 12 May 2020.

Namibia Rugby Union (NRU) acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Elizma Theron issued a statement on Monday saying the player has extended his apologies to the NRU, his club and all of his teammates.

“He admitted his negligence and also his regret for using a product without doing proper research. He indicated his willingness to assist the NRU with anti-doping education. This will be done in collaboration with World Rugby,” the CEO said.

The statement further states the NRU has acquired the assistance of a nutritional expert during the camp held with the national team players recently to develop individual nutritional plans and educate players on how their bodies can perform optimally with the correct nutrition at appropriate intervals, and proper hydration.

“Additional, anti-doping education sessions will be conducted at the beginning of 2017 and tests will be done throughout the year on different levels of the game,” reads the statement.

Bouwer is the second player to have been suspended by World Rugby this year for a similar offence, after Cameron McNab, who also received a four-year ban from September this year.
