The Minister of Mines and Energy, Tom Alweendo, has called on Government to pay attention to good governance when it comes to mineral resources.

He expressed his concern during a media conference here on Tuesday, saying there is a growing public perception that suggests that Government is not managing the mineral resources in a transparent manner.

"It is believed that mineral licences are managed in a corrupt manner. Corruption or the perception thereof cannot and should not be tolerated," said Alweendo.

He noted that one way of fighting corruption is to be more transparent in the processes of issuing mineral licences.

Alweendo said it should be made clear to the public how such licences can be obtained in a transparent manner.

"When processes are clear to the public, it is certain that we would have addressed the public's concerns about corruption in dealing with mineral licensing processing," he said.

Alweendo further called on the public to assist Government in rooting out corruption or the perception thereof by providing information to the relevant organs of the State that are tasked with dealing with corruption.

The mining and energy sector is one of the most important segments of the country's economy and currently contributes more than 10 per cent to the Gross Domestic Product.

"The mineral resource potential of the country is indeed great and has yet to be fully tapped for the benefit of the nation. Hence, everyone should root out corruption to make Namibia a better place to live for all of us," said Alweendo.
